Date:       Tues 6th September 2022
Time:       7.00pm - 8.00pm
Venue:    Online via Zoom

The theory of plate tectonics is an ever-evolving phenomenon. The evidence base for the theory is constantly being expanded on by geologists. However, in my own classroom practice I have been grappling with the idea of teaching more complex plate tectonics concepts rather than sticking with simpler, yet outdated ideas such as convection currents in the mantle are the driving mechanisms for plate movement.

This session will cover practical strategies to plan and teach more complex plate tectonic theories in an age-appropriate way without over-complicating the content in a Junior Cycle classroom. This session will look at how Lee plans to teach plate tectonics in 1st year and uses retrieval practice planning to provide students with more opportunities to expand their knowledge on the topic over the course of their Junior Cycle Journey. There will be a full set of resources (plans, PowerPoints, notes, annotated diagrams, and worksheets) provided for all attendees, ready to be used in their own classroom practice immediately. Additionally, Lee will examine where the evolving plate tectonics theories fit within the context of the SEC JC Geography sample papers with sample answers provided.
