Workplace Training and Compliance, mediation management awareness course is designed to support staff and reduce risk when assisting with medication intervention. Safguarding all within the school setting is paramount. In line with the Department of Education’s expectations for schools to support pupils with chronic health conditions where schools require clear procedures for managing medication and health needs, all must adhere to legal compliance, policies and procedures to reflect national guidance and best practice. This awareness course aligns with Managing Chronic Health Conditions at School, a widely adopted framework supporting school communities in safely meeting the needs of students with conditions including diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and anaphylaxis and reflects the shared responsibility of school leaders, staff, parents and healthcare professionals. An introduction to the following will be included:
- Anaphylaxis and auto-injector awareness — awareness on recognising severe allergic reactions and the safe use and storage of devices such as EpiPens, Jext or other auto-injectors, in accordance with recognised guidance for schools. Student Support Plan referenced.
- Diabetes Mellitus awareness — awareness on diabetic mellitus conditions, recognising symptoms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, and awareness of emergency responses, supporting pupils with Type 1/2 diabetes to manage their condition safely within the school environment. Reference to HSE documents in support of Diabetes Mellitus.
- Epilepsy Awareness — awareness of different seizure types, trigger recognition and protocols for responding appropriately, including the awareness around assistance with emergency medicines such as buccal midazolam where a student specific medication plan identifies the need, and where staff have received designated training.
